Government of Naoero celebrates successful first year of partnership with Commonwealth Bank of Australia

The Government of Naoero, today announced a significant milestone in its strategic partnership with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), marking the successful first year of the Agency Agreement that has transformed banking services across the island nation.

The inaugural year has seen the seamless transition from Bendigo Bank to CBA, with banking services in Naoero remaining stable, reliable, and focused on community access and financial inclusion.

The review meeting was held at the Consulate General Office of Naoero in Brisbane and was led by President David Adeang, joined by Senior Official Principal of Naoero Banking (CBA Agency Naoero) Chris Durman and banking consultant Greg Watson.  From CBA the meeting was attended by Executive General Manager Sam Taranto, Executive Director of Institutional Banking & Markets Justin Sharp, and General Manager of Financial Crime Compliance James Hatchard.

Following a comprehensive review, both parties agreed to establish a joint working group, which will serve as the primary governance forum to address operational, commercial, finance-related, and compliance matters. This partnership emphasises transparency, improved reporting, and strategic initiatives to strengthen Naoero’s banking ecosystem.

The Government of Naoero reaffirmed its commitment to a review to enhance financial literacy, digital banking capabilities, and community programs, including assessing how best to assist with school banking and scam awareness initiatives. Discussions also highlighted the importance of culturally sensitive approaches to compliance and anti-money laundering standards.

“This milestone reflects the strength of our partnership and our shared commitment to delivering sustainable, community-focused banking services,” President David Adeang said.

“We look forward to working closely with CBA to resolve outstanding issues and to further develop our financial infrastructure for the benefit of all dei-Naoero.”

Both parties remain dedicated to ongoing engagement, with regular operational meetings and strategic governance discussions. The Government of Naoero gratefully acknowledges CBA’s ongoing support and its commitment to a long-term partnership that prioritises community access, transparency, and cultural understanding.
