Minister Lionel Aingimea is appointed Vice President of the Republic of Nauru

Minister Lionel Aingimea is appointed Vice President of the Republic of Nauru following the historic and successful passing of the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 creating the office of the VP.

Following the passing of the bill in Parliament this morning, the Vice President was sworn in to office.

His Excellency President David Adeang says with the passage of the Act, “we have taken a significant step forward in strengthening our nation’s governance and modernising our constitutional framework”.

Vice President Aingimea said the position is not one taken lightly, and calls on all departments and state-owned enterprises to work together and support the office, which in turn supports Nauru.

“The work that we do, we do for our country. And the work that benefits this country benefits Nauruans and all the residents here.”

The Vice President will support the President in carrying out the duties of office and, when required, assume the responsibilities of the President in the absence of the President.

The Constitution (Amendment) Bill tabled on 14 January 2026 was returned to the table after a layover period of 90 days for further debate and was subsequently passed by the Parliament with the full support of the 18 Members of Parliament.
